Description

Cuisenaire rods are a fun learning aid to teach maths to kids. These wooden number rods were invented by Belgium school teacher Georges Cuisenaire, who wrote a book about them in 1952 (Les Nombres en Couleurs), the colored rods have long been helping children learning maths in schools and at home. Cuisenaire, a violin player, taught music as well as arithmetic in the primary school in Thuin. One fine day he was wondering, why children found it easy and enjoyable to pick up a tune and yet found mathematics neither easy nor enjoyable. These comparisons with music and its representation led Cuisenaire to experiment with some color rods. Rods were as handy and as piano keys and structured according to number values, he began to use these in his teaching of arithmetic subjects ranging from Counting, sequences, patterns, and algebraic reasoning. Addition and subtraction (additive reasoning), Multiplication, and division (multiplicative reasoning, Fractions, ratio, and proportion.

Cuisenaire rods are a hands-on approach to learning, one where kids actively participate. Kids contribute to their own education and through an intuitive, guided system they develop concrete, as well as, an abstract understanding of mathematical principles while having fun.
